Pinterest Acquires VisualGraph

Pinterest announced earlier this month it has acquired image-recognition startup VisualGraph for an undisclosed ammount. The company's technology combines visual object recognition with search and machine-learning infrastructures to build data files based on images instead of words.

Using VisualGraph's capabilities, Pinterest would be able to track objects commonly pinned by its users, such as high-heeled shoes or sunglasses, and use the data to target relevant ads and other content to them.



 “We are excited for the opportunity to combine machine vision with human vision and curation, and to build a visual discovery experience that is both aesthetically appealing and immensely useful for people everywhere,”  wrote VisualGaph co-founder Kevin Jing in a note announcing the deal on the company's website.

And to Mashable, Pinterst wrote: "Our mission at Pinterest is to help people discover the things they love and do these things in their real lives. We hope to build better image recognition technology that helps us understand what people are Pinning so we can help people find more things they love."
