Google+ and SEO Backlinking

- Saturday, January 11, 2014

So what's the deal with all this backlinking? What links are nofollow and what links are dofollow? It sounds confusing because, even on the same site or social media platforms, one link in a specific place can generate a follow, where in another place it will generate a nofollow. You've got to know what links to put where in order for you to reap the benefits of having them. This is especially important on your Google+ Personal Profile and your Google+ Business Page.

One major reason that Google+ is growing in popularity and users is because it is an essential part of gaining authentic backlinks and, in turn, enabling you to rank higher on Google's search engine. But not every link will generate you a backlink. Here are three things you can do now to make your link count.

  1. Add a link to your website within your STORY or TAGLINE (either as an anchor text or the full link). This will generate a dofollow link.
  2. Do not add a link to your website within the "CONTRIBUTOR" section. Google will pick this up and generate a nofollow for this link.
  3. When sharing a status with a link, copy the link first, then once it is generated into a preview (that is now "below the line") delete the link you added first (that is "above the line") and replace it with the copy you want to describe your link. See picture below for an example.
